Rough Road in Sichuan Province, China I spent two weeks in October of 2011 in the rugged and remote areas of the Sichuan Province of China. I flew into Chengdu and hired a driver and guide to take us around the remote areas outside the city and up into the Daixu Mountain range. Few travelers go into this part of the world and the journey was challenging in many ways. but I would not have missed a beat. There was a lot of road construction due to the horrible earthquake a few years ago and the intent on China to expand out into these areas. There were few quality hotels to stay, although satisfactory to make it a true adventure. We visited several national parks of China with most of them totally unknown to the outside world and quite splendid. It truly was an amazing place with majestic mountains, unique cultures (Tibetan) and the timely colors of autumn accenting the scenery.
Capturing Cultural Portraits The images in this album reflect some of the various portrait images I have taken over the past 2+ years when touring Asia. Asia offers so much variety of cultures and is a great place to improve your skills on photographing people. Several of the images below offer different methods I used to get the subject in an effective way and are available here in conjunction with my article on Capturing Cultural Portraits. Take a read and scan throught these and would love to hear your comments on how effective you feel these images are.
Papua New Guinea I spent two weeks during the peak Sing-Sing season in early August this year to capture what National Geographic calls one of the top three cultural events in the world. I have wanted to go to PNG for over 20 years to see the native tribes in their traditional costumes and experience what it was like to encounter them face to face. The Sing-Sing's have gone on for over 50 years now to bring together the truly diverse tribes of PNG into a central stage to peacefully demonstrate their unique offerings and way of life. It would be nice if the world practiced this a little more!! are some of the images I captured while there and hope you enjoy.

People of Flores Island, Indonesia Literally an unknown destination to me 6 months ago, I decided to try to find somewhere still "undiscovered". Flores Island in Indonesia ended up being that place and of all things is predominantly Catholic. There were areas of Flores that were breath-taking, but the single item that made me fall in love with the island....the people. Life was simple and appeared uncomplicated for these people (although the satellite dish at each hut spoiled much of this!) and it was reflected in their attitudes. When was the last time you went to a cultural destination and was not asked for money or turned away at most chances? These people were extremely pleasurable to be around and not only allowed me to photograph them, but showed genuine interest in us. How many other tourists did we see...I counted...7 for 8 days. Flores just opened up their island to air traffic from Bali about 1.5 years ago and has a single road through the island....the closest place I have been to as "paradise" that I remember. Smile! If you want to see more of this island, please feel free to go to my website, (no www).
