Welcome to Travel Photographers Network
Travel Photographers Network (TPN) is proud to be the #1 travel photography community and website in the Internet. We are a family of avid photographers and travelers who gather for comraderie, to help one another improve our photographic eyes and skills, and to share our collective knowledge on destinations, travel tips, photography equipment, photo software, etc. We welcome photographers of all skill levels and from all walks of life. Our members have traveled to every continent in the world, and by all means known to man.
If you get excited about jumping on a plane or train or ship, in your car or on your bicycle, or even getting behind a dog sled, to go across the equator or continent or street, and can't imagine doing this without a camera, TPN is for you!
All new members to TPN receive full member benefits for 30 days. After 30 days, pay for an annual subscription and receive full member benefits including a personal gallery, biography page, links to your personal and professional websites and blogs, etc. All members are able to participate in the forums, contribute and comment on articles, and critique other member photos.
History and Milestones
TPN was born out of the Nature Photographers Network. NPN Founder Jim Erhardt recognized there was a hole to fill for travel photographers and that many of the NPN members also travelled extensively. In late 2003 Jim created the Travel Photographers Network. Somewhere around 2006, Jim Erhardt turned over TPN to one of it's prominent members, Jim White. Jim White was an avid, seasoned traveler and photographer who nurtured and grew TPN as owner/editor until January 2010 when he turned it over to the current owner/editor Walter Rowe.
Some important milestones in TPN's history include:
#1 in Travel Photography
Travel Photographers Network is proud to be the #1 search result for travel photography on the Internet. Go to any search engine, plug in travel photography, and TPN will be the first entry in their search results. We do not pay for this esteemed ranking in the search engines. We achieved and maintain this search engine placement solely through the incredible contributions of our many talented members who regularly post amazing photographs, write great articles on destinations and products and techniques, participate in enormously helpful forum discussions, and who give invaluable constructive criticism in the photo critique galleries.
Travel Photographers Network takes great pride in recognizing the amazing work of its talented members. Each week the moderators select and highlight one image from each photography category and one from the weekly challenge by posting them in a special "Member Showcase" album and watermarking them with a gold ribbon. TPN periodically features a slideshow of these images on the front page to further recognize these amazing images and the photographers who create them.
Around The World With TPN
In 2008 TPN members banded together and created their own photo book titled "Around The World With TPN". The book was created through a juried selection process and showcases more than 100 images from TPN members. You can purchase your own copy this book from Blurb.com. The price covers only the cost of printing and a small fee for TPN member Sarah Clarehart who freely contributed considerable time and energy to design the layout and create the final book. TPN receives no money from purchase of this book and all of the images were created and contributed by TPN members. Get your copy and see this amazing collection of images.
Travel Photographers Network was created in late 2003 by Jim Erhardt, founder of Nature Photographers Network. TPN was designed and hosted by the developers who designed and hosted the Nature Photographers Network. Since that time TPN has undergone two transformations. In the summer of 2008, owner Jim White paid to have a custom site developed for TPN. It was a dramatic departure from the original site. It had a lot of promise, but also a lot of bugs. TPN worked with the developers for three years to improve the design and fix the flaws. In those three years, many of the open source content management systems matured. One in particular (glFusion) became very attractive and favorable over maintaining a custom developed solution.
In March of 2011, TPN moved to glFusion. With glFusion we retained the best of the features from custom site we were leaving, offered lots of new features we could not offer before, and reverted the look and feel of TPN back closer to it's roots in NPN. In this latest transformation, we also decided to start with a clean slate on site content. There was no smooth, automated way to migrate all of our legacy content to the new site, and much of the content was stale and dated.
The mission of the Travel Photographers Network is to:
- Improve the quality of your travel photography through the comraderie and exchange of knowledge between amateurs and professionals
- Promote the work of our members - award-winning members include David DuChemin, Matt Brandon, Kah Kit Yoong, and Marsel van Oosten
- Promote awareness of the importance of Travel Photography as a form of expression
Travel Photographers Network is a community of like-minded photographers who enjoy combining our love of photography with our love of travel. Our website is organized into several sections to provide the best member experience possible.
The Photography section is unique in that comments and constructive criticism are offered to members by members. Our membership is diverse .. from full-time professional to the weekend hobbyist. All are treated equal, every photograph receives the same level of attention, and every photographer is given the same level of respect and honest feedback. TPN continuously receives positive feedback for how its members have helped to improve the individual's skill and eye for imagery, and for how much enjoyment the community has added to each photographer's experience.
The Articles section of TPN provides consistly high quality reading material for our members. We provide destination-based articles that highlight all the great photographic opportunities and cultural experiences one can enjoy in locations all over the globe, reviews of photographic equipment and tools that enable you to bring out the best in the photographs you bring home, and we provide how-tos (tips) for how to improve your photographic eye and your skills behind the lens to capture the very best imagery possible.
The Forums section of TPN provides our members with a place to interact with one another on an equal level, whether they are amateurs seeking the advice of professionals and well-seasoned travelers, or members just sharing life's experiences with fellow members. TPN prides itself on not distinguishing between different skill levels of our members. Every member of TPN was "just starting out" at some point in their past. We respect that and make every attempt to support all our members at every skill level and place in life.
TPN is supported entirely through member subscription fees. All of the staff are volunteers and we utilize no advertising with the exception of periodic sponsored photo contests.
