Cliff Walk in Newport, Rhode Island
Newport, Rhode Island is known for the Guilded Age "summer cottages" built by the very wealthy socialites of New York City in the late 1800's and early 1900's to escape the heat of summer in the city. These prestigious estates were built along the cliffs of Newport island facing the sea to afford the owners the cool ocean breezes. The wealthy home owners were not pleased when a walkway was built along these cliffs that allowed "normal" people to see into these homes. The small people along the cliff walk above provide a sense of scale for one of the smaller cottages along the Cliff Walk.
