Fox Glacier
Last year I did a one day hike on the glacier, we certainly needed the crampons and the Alpenstock to keep a foothold. In places the guide cut out a few steps with his pick axe. This is a side on view of the Glacier, from the side of the valley where we had to climb up to gain acces. The inclusion of a few people gives us a good sense of scale. This river of ice is enormous and can be quite frightening. While we were on the glacier there were several icefalls in the serac field higher up. It was never close enough to be really dangerous, but the cracks were loud enough to make you wonder...
