I spent two weeks in October of 2011 in the rugged and remote areas of the Sichuan Province of China. I flew into Chengdu and hired a driver and guide to take us around the remote areas outside the city and up into the Daixu Mountain range. Few travelers go into this part of the world and the journey was challenging in many ways. but I would not have missed a beat. There was a lot of road construction due to the horrible earthquake a few years ago and the intent on China to expand out into these areas. There were few quality hotels to stay, although satisfactory to make it a true adventure. We visited several national parks of China with most of them totally unknown to the outside world and quite splendid. It truly was an amazing place with majestic mountains, unique cultures (Tibetan) and the timely colors of autumn accenting the scenery.
