Black & White Photography

The Timeless Art of Monochrome

Black & White Photography
The Timeless Art of Monochrome
by Michael Freeman

I review a lot of photography books and more often than not I don't find a lot of difference between them. It is sort of like dozens of copies of the same old thing. Then that special one arrives at my door and I know I have another real keeper for my library. Black & White Photography by Michael Freeman is not going to be just another library book here because it is going to spend most of the time right near where I can get to it.

The Peak Design “EveryDay Sling” Camera Bag

The sling bag as it is carried over the shoulder and across the back, or across the front to access the contents
The sling bag as it is carried over the shoulder and across the back, or across the front to access the contents
The Peak Design “EveryDay Sling” is a new design for over the shoulder type bags. When I first looked at this bag I was not too impressed, then I packed my Nikon D800 and the two lenses I use into it and changed my mind real fast. In the main compartment I put the two lenses, which are on the large side, and the camera with another lens on it, into the camera compartment and had room left over. This section has removable dividers, like most do, but these are more sturdy and well padded than most I see. This is not the only compartment this bag has though. (see illustration #3) - (A) - is the zipper for an expandable pocket, which the straps (B) allow to open farther than when it is in the unused state. This pocket is large enough to even hold another lens or two, or a flash unit, cleaning kits, plus maybe battery and memory card pouches. These same straps will also hold a small tripod under a flap.

The "Slide" Strap by Peak Design

The "Slide" Strap
by Paul W. Faust

The new Peak Design "Slide" camera sling strap is stylish, rugged, versatile, comfortable and interchangeable, which is what makes it one of the finest professional camera straps in the world. It can be used several ways around the body and is very easy to slide away and slide back out to use, hence the name. The slide has a quick connect system that allows you to quickly unhook it for other uses. I really like a strap that lets me work with the camera from my side. I never much liked the hang-around-your-neck type straps that would make me want to pack it all up after a few hours. The across-the-chest method is the one I now use all the time. It is more comfortable, easier to use, out of the way when I don?t need it (such as when I am using my second camera for my Infrared work) and a happy neck at the end of the day. Check it out at the web address below.

The Slide retails for $59.95. When bundled with Clutch ($39.95) in the Pro Strap Pack, the bundle is $89.95  - sometimes Peak Design has special offers. Order from Peak Design.

Creative Visualization For Photographers

I have seen a lot of Mr. Sammon's work over the years and his new book, Creative Visualization, shows exactly why he has been so successful at what he does. The book contains a whole collection of subjects and covers how Sammons deals with them using his time-tested creative photo techniques. The easy-to-follow instructions cover everything from the first visualization to the post-processing to get the final image. The before and after illustrations also include screen captures of the software tool settings he used so you can see how the image progresses. This is really a master reference book on how to turn what could have been a so-so image into a prize winning image.

This soft cover book is about 9x11 inches, with 285 pages. Check web site for price. Distributed by Focal Press, at: www.focalpress.com

I rate it: A

Digital Black & White Landscape Photography

Digital Black & White Landscape Photography
Fine Art Techniques from Camera to Print
by - Gary Wagner

I love black & white photography no matter if it starts out as a B&W capture, or if it is converted from a color original. This new book covers the landscape part of digital B&W photography from start to finish and is full of great illustrations for step by step instruction on how each image was made. Many of these illustrations also include screen captures of the software used in post-processing of the image and these screen captures also show the tool settings the author used for each step. That is one thing I find very helpful when it comes to knowing exactly how an image was adjusted. Just telling a reader this and that was used does very little in my opinion, and I do not like having to guess how a finished look was obtained. Show me and the book becomes more valuable, as this one certainly has. If you come across a difficult lighting situation the book also covers that with its HDR examples. I just wish it was bigger and with more examples. Maybe next time. (hint) I do find the price a bit high for this size of a book.

This soft cover book is about 7.5x10 inches, with 125 pages, retails for US-$34.95, and is published by Amherst Media at: www.AmherstMedia.com.

I rate it: A+
