This fellow must go to the Boathouse Bar at Central Park every sunny day of the year. He appeared to be in his 50s, had a bottle of wine next to him, and had an iPod Mini and Jukebox to plug it into. He would pick songs from the Rat Pack era and start singing them, then tell a story to his friends sitting all around him. I had to take his picture.

It was the carnival in town today - wasn't expecting the sunshine to come with it since we are in the middle of a continuous string of bad weather!

At a coffee shop in Nice on the French Riviera we sat to have breakfast and I saw the dog on the stool next to the counter.
No ways was I going to miss this shot and as I entered the dog put its paws on the counter as if he was ready to order something.

This woman in Norcia (Italy) was smoking a cigarette on her own. She did not seem very happy with life. The whole scene had something sad about it. The fact that she is close to the edge of the frame and the window with the metal bars enhance the mood of being captive.

This is an abstract of my favorite work in the Sculpture Garden of D.C.'s Hirshhorn Museum. I took this during the beginning of a snowfall, which I am pining for now as it was 100 degress Fahrenheit here in D.C. today!

showing their faith, many devotees are peirced around the body and hooks attached, in this case, the devotee has hooks pierced through his skin at the back, ropes attached and the chariot attached to those. This he pulled around 2 kilometers from the field to the temple.

We were driving down the road and had stopped by a small store for some water near the town of Moxi in the Suichuan Province of China. I noticed a wonderful elderly couple sitting next door and asked if they minded if I shot their picture. The entire family appeared and we ended up having a wonderful time (about 30 minutes) and talking through their family history as 4 generations were present. This was the great-grandma of the family at a spry age of 92.

Just peep behind an open door in the medina and chances are that you are looking into a workshop of some kind. I saw potters, leatherworkers and metal beaters. Mostly they are too dark to take pictures without flash, but this weaver had a nice bright strip light to work under. The kind of shuttle he is putting thread in is often used as an ornament in the UK, we used to have a lot of them in the valley where I live.

In all my travels, I have always had this guilt about intruding on others for my photography. So, prior to my trip a couple of weeks ago to Myanmar, I purchased the new Canon Selphy printer with battery pack (watch much as the printer!) and took it with me. It was a fantastic purchase and really allowed me the wonderful feeling of at least giving something back. I had some very bad weather in Mandalay and visited a Buddist Nunnery. Having the ability to provide the print (in her hands on the front right) opened up everything and allowed so much more in being with these special poeple beyond photography. I regret not to have done so earlier and will forever carry the printer with me... well worth the experience!

This picture was taken in the countryside in Burkina Faso while we were hiking towards waterfalls. I suddenly looked back and saw those two children on top of a cliff, watching us from afar like silent vigils guarding their territory.
I'm still struggling with black & white but I decided to post it anyway.

This boy was hanging around Lake Manyara while I was there some time ago, and offered to pose this chameleon for me. He clearly expected that my lens was trained squarely on the animal, but I found him and his intent gaze to be much more compelling. So I zoomed out to capture the broader scene.

At a metal work factory while photographing there this elderly worker started talking to me.
After a while I returned and took a shot of him working
unfortunately unable to see his face because of the machine,
but he heard or felt that I was there and lifted his head with this smile.

Fes was a place of considerable importance until recent times, being the depot for the caravan trade from the south and east of the African continent. Nowadays, in the leather Souk, one of the most interesting thing is a visit to the still traditional tanneries. Amazing "smellscape" (in a good and bad way at the same time), fabulous collection of colors and sounds, these tanneries are like a last relic of a past long gone !

This is my friend Ian, the Bacup Town Crier. At official functions and festive occasions Ian acts as our official Town Crier, announcing news from our town and alerting us to events going on. Last Saturday he was telling people to go to the Arts & Crafts fair in the town centre. As Ian has a Black Belt and 5th Dan in Judo, and is very skilled in various forms of martial arts, people do as they are told!
