Traveling Light

By Hank Pennington

There are times and places when you need your gear closer to hand or would rather not carry a bag or pack. Belt pouches are the ideal solution, fitting well in suitcases while adding little weight.

My Nikon 300 f/4 lens and 1.4X teleconverter provide excellent service for casual telephoto work on long trips, along with vast savings in bulk and weight compared to my Nikon 500 f/4 telephoto.

The 12-24mm and 18-200mm Nikon zooms provide more range of focal lengths than my usual 20-35mm, 35-70mm and 80-200mm D-series f/2.8 zooms at about 1/3 the weight. They may not be quite as sharp at maximum aperture, but at mid- and small apertures performance is plenty good for commercial use.

My Gitzo GT1541T tripod and Really Right Stuff BH-20 ballhead weigh less than a third of my reliable old Gitzo G1349 tripod and Arca Swiss B-1 ballhead, yet still supports 17 pounds of camera and lens. Unless I'm planning to spend long hours peering through long lenses, the shorter, lighter 1541T is my first choice for travel.

The Tamrac Adventure 9 daypack will carry all my usual camera gear for travel as well as personal items, yet it's much smaller than my rugged old Tamrac 787 pack. Unless I need long telephotos on a trip, the 787 stays home.

A camera setup for travel should cover all your needs while being compact and lightweight. This array suits me perfectly, and yet there's still room for at least one more lens in the Tamrac Zoom Traveler 4 bag. Yet bag and all weigh only 10 pounds when I add a compact tripod!
