Tibet

I am in love with Tibet. I visited in 2006 and 2010. It is an amazing land with powerful people.

Potala Palace, Lhasa, Tibet. There is hardly a square foot of this magnificent palace that is not worthy of a detailed photo, but it is dim and crowded--hard to get a good shot.

The Bokhar market district surrounding the Jokhang in Lhasa is swarmed with the vendors of many sacred items and souvenirs, but most important are the yak butter vendors. Pilgrims buy the butter, which is provided in a small plastic bag with a plastic spoon. They then add a small dab to as many of the butter-burning shrines within the Jokhang as possible.

Some of these pilgrims have walked hundreds of miles, prostrating themselves at regular intervals. Now, before the holiest site of Tibetan Buddhism, the Jokhang, they may prostrate themselves for days at a time.

The streets were filled with Chinese police to protect the Chinese-appointed Panchen Lama. The atmosphere was thick with apprehension. We were holed up in a restaurant across the street from these shops.
