Staff Profile - Sheril Foust

Sheril has been an avid photographer since the age of 10 when her father gave her his old Brownie and some very simple advice.  He said, "Look through the viewfinder, check all four corners, and imagine how you want your picture to look, then shoot."  The shutterbug bit.

After winning the "Young Photographers Showcase" in 1980 she began doing wedding and portrait photography to finance her college tuition.  She spent the next several years honing her skills in portraiture and photojournalism by donating her time and talents to a non-profit organization known as Shake-A-Leg, a second stage rehab for spinal cord injured.

A devastating car accident in 1996 put photography on hold for nearly three years.  With the encouragement of a very dear friend and the support of her husband and children she picked up her camera, dusted it off, and started over again.

Her first endeavor was a fundraiser for the families of the policemen and firemen that died in the 9/11 disaster in New York City .  Her image, and images donated by two other photographers, as well as a local photofinishing lab, helped raise nearly $80,000 for these families.

She has made numerous presentations to high school students considering a career in graphic arts or photography.  She has been published in many local newspapers and publications.

Although her roots lie in portraiture she has discovered a sincere love of nature photography.  Living in the northeastern United States she is able to enjoy all of the four seasons and never misses an opportunity to photograph the beauty that surrounds all of us.

Traditionally her work has been done on slide and/or print film using Minolta equipment and special effects filters.  In 2004 she went digital with the purchase of a Nikon D70 and a couple of lenses.

Sheril has had no formal training in photography and relies on instinct alone.  She is currently working as a portrait and wedding photographer and loving every minute of it.

She lives in Rhode Island with her husband, two daughters and two golden retrievers.
